Celebrating 40 years Family owned-family grown
2008 Marks the fortieth anniversary of the opening of Bird-in-Hand Corporations first lodging property. The Bird-in-Hand Motor Inn (now our Family Inn) opened its doors to guests in April 1968. Although the inn was the Smucker familys first entry into the hospitality business the spirit of hospitality was simply an extension of their Mennonite way-of-life. Grandma Smucker, affectionately known as Grussy, had long modeled the traditions of inviting guests into her home, and their family table was always a place of community gathering and conversation.
The family first settled in Bird-in-Hand in 1911 when Jonathan Stoltzfus, great grandfather to the current generation of Smuckers operating the businesses, bought a sixty-acre farm along Route 340. For over 50 years the Smucker Family farmed the land before developing part of the family homestead into a motel. Today John & Jim, the third generation of Smuckers, oversee the operations of the Bird-in-Hand Corporation, and continue the traditions of hospitality that they learned from Grussy. They look forward to celebrating 40 years by welcoming you and your family to Bird-in-Hand.
